Please read these guidelines carefully and use the journal template before submitting. Manuscripts that do not follow the guidelines or the template may be returned to the authors before review.

1 · Submission Stage

Papers are submitted by the author online through the Sophist OJS system; submissions by e-mail are not accepted. The content of the article should not be submitted simultaneously to another journal.

2 · Preparing the Manuscript

There is no general limitation on the overall size, the number of figures or the level of detail considered necessary. However, the appropriate length of a manuscript depends on the information presented in the paper. A manuscript should consist of the following content.

Title

Simple, concise and informative, with only the first word capitalized. Also provide a shortened title of at most 100 characters (including spaces) for running headers.

Authors and affiliations

List all authors with corresponding addresses and e-mail. Precede each address with a numerical superscript matching the superscript after the author's name. This information will be published unless authors request otherwise.

Abstract

Completely self-consistent (no figure, table, equation or reference citations), not exceeding 250 words and written as a single paragraph.

6 · Main Body of the Paper

  • The body of the paper must range between 3,000 and 8,000 words, written in Merriweather. It may be divided into sections; sections should be bold and subsections italic.
  • Whichever spelling you choose (British or American English), please be consistent throughout.
  • Use hyphens consistently and avoid unnecessary ones.
  • The words "section(s)", "equation(s)", "figure(s)" and "reference(s)" are abbreviated as "sect(s).", "eq(s).", "fig(s)." and "ref(s)." unless they are the first word of a sentence. The word "table" is always written in full.
  • Latin expressions such as e.g., i.e., et al. and versus (vs.) should be set in italic.
  • All terms or titles in Arabic should be transliterated following the Library of Congress guide. Names of persons should not be transliterated.

Footnotes, kept to a minimum, are indicated by numerical superscripts (1, 2, 3, …) and placed at the foot of the relevant page.

9 · Proof Correction Stage

  • Once proofs are ready, the authors are informed by e-mail and the proof is attached in PDF format.
  • Authors are asked to check the proofs carefully. The aim of proofreading is to correct errors that may have occurred during production, so please check the completeness of text, equation breaks, figures, tables and references.
  • Only essential corrections are accepted, and the author has the final responsibility for the corrections.
  • Corrections should be returned within 48 hours as a detailed list by e-mail, quoting the location of each amendment (page, column and line number). Please do not alter the PDF proof file, add annotations or send back an amended manuscript file.
  • As soon as the proofs are returned, the paper is corrected and posted for online publication.

10 Offprint

Authors receive the PDF file (without cover) of their article free of charge as soon as it is posted for online publication.

Fees Open Access

Sophist is an open access journal. Authors pay no submission, review or publication fees (0.00 USD), and readers can read and download all articles free of charge. See Publication Fees.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items; submissions that do not adhere to these guidelines may be returned to authors.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in these Author Guidelines.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions for ensuring a blind review have been followed.
